This was lovely! I concur that most of my friends 70+ are more engaged in living than those half their age.

Maybe it's because those who grew up in the sixties know that it's all about turning on, tuning in, and dropping out [of the mindless grind]!

What a beautiful piece. I am 71, and I have friends who don’t know what to do with themselves after they retire. I enjoy taking courses; I am learning to speak Yiddish right now. For those of you who are younger: try to engage with some older people. You may find that you have a lot in common. Your interests, hobbies, knowledge, etc. don’t disappear when you get old. There is a John Orone song called Hello in There”

Thanks for these kind words. I agree that there is SO MUCH we younger folk can learn from our elders. Many societies still value elders as the wise ones. I wish the USA did so more, but it's up to us, one connection at a time, to make that change happen.

Loved this, Samuel. I retired 10 years ago to have time to write, to travel more extensively, to examine my life to see if had meant anything, if I had made a difference in the lives of my children, my students, my greater family and friends. What was my legacy to the world? Kudos to you for your search for meaning, too!
